Rokugan (Legend of the Five Rings: Oriental Adventures, Campaign Setting)
Published in Hardcover by Alderac Entertainment (October, 2002)
Authors: D. J. Trindle, Rich Wulf, Ryan Carman, and Seth Mason
Average review score:

An outstanding D20 Conversion
AEG never fails to deliver the goods, and in this case they give them to us in spades. Rokugan is an excellant conversion from the classic 'Legend of the 5 Rings' RPG system to the highly successful and popular 'D20' system. While not a stand-alone product it is still very meaty with dozens of feats and several excellant new classes with the 'L5R' flavor.

All in all a very solid book and an excellant followup to the Oriental Adventures book (which I also highly recommend if you intend to run L5R using D20 rules)

Something I would like to point out. This book isn't just a new collection of feats and classes and skills. This book presents one of the most dynamic asian fantasy settings roleplayers have ever had the pleasure of gaming in. It is rich in history and culture (and as much as I don't like the most recent history, it's still largely entertaining.)

In short, 2 thumbs up. Way up.

a great supplement to Oriental Adventures
In my opinion, this book is great. It has a lot of excellent feats, spells, skills, classes, and information for any Oriental D&D campaign. I recommend it equally as much as Oriental Adventures.

Best Oriental d20 book yet
The one problem with d20 products is that non-TSR sources have made better books than WotC-owned TSR has. This book, for example, is clearly better than TSR's "Oriental Adventures". The Samurai is done better, and there is a ninja class. Also of interest is a new class called "courtier", which is excellent for more cerebral campaigns.

Add in the new skills contained in this book, and its easy to recommend this book.

Sailing Smart: Winning Techniques, Tactics, and Strategies
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (July, 1990)
Authors: Buddy Melges, Charles Mason, and Ted Brennam
Average review score:

More stuff to help you go fast.
This book is a fast read, so it's easy to recognize (and reinforce) what you already know, while picking out the new stuff you didn't know that will help you race faster.

As an example, here are three things that I benefited from immediately. After you read the book, you'll have your own list.

1. The mental aspect of boat preparation. You have to do whatever it takes to KNOW that your boat is fast and ready to win. Otherwise, when you're going slow you'll be making excuses instead of finding what's wrong and fixing it.

2. A killer diagram showing spinnaker pole positioning for reaching. This diagram makes it completely obvious what to do, but it's TOTALLY contrary to the "prevailing wisdom" among most of the folks I sail with. But the first time I used Buddy's position, boy did we point with that chute!

3. A great description of "feathering" the boat upwind on the beat.

As always, the winning combination is read, then sail, read some more, sail some more, then repeat. If you don't go on the water to practice, no book can help you.

The downside is that the book was written before the new racing rules came into effect, so be sure you're fully familiar with the rules before taking Buddy's advice on tactics that rely specifically on rules for their validity. (For example, in one circumstance the advice to a leeward boat is to luff up quickly, and "tap" a windward boat, fouling them out of the race. You'll be on thin ice if you try this in the new rules, with their clear emphasis on the importance of avoiding collisions.)

Sailing Lessons from Buddy
Many books cover the fundamentals of sailboat racing, but few do it with the charm of Buddy Melges, the Olympic medalist and America's Cup defender from rural Wisconsin. The lessons on tactics and boathandling are all here, interspersed with tales of races won and lost (mostly won) by the author. The book is well organized and clearly written. A short story from Melges' early career touches on the importance of sportsmanship without being preachy. Over the years I have read this book again and again as much for enjoyment as for instruction.

Serious about racing?
This is a short, easy to read book. You can knock it off in a couple of hours. What you learn in reading is how to win. No fancy tunning tricks, just the things you need to know how to win--the basics. His record proves the point. It is the best use of $10 I can think of to improve your skills. I'm a sailing instructor and plan to apply some of his ideas to my instruction.

The Snake Scientist
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (01 March, 1999)
Authors: Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop
Average review score:

A unique look into one of the wonders of the world.
Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop have managed to bring this awesome display of nature and the man who studies it to life! This book would be a wonderful addition to any household, library or school, as it describes the work of a dedicated scientist who has committed his life to understanding what we as humans can gain from the lives of garter snakes. Dr. Mason obviously loves his work and loves passing along his knowledge to others, young and old. "The Snake Scientist" is an accurate picture of an almost undescribable phenomenom.

An inspirational book for kids
This book about the adventures of Bob Mason, an Oregon State University scientist who studies snakes all over the world, is a must-read for any child (grades four to seven would be great) who loves science or nature - and a good gift idea for any parent who would like to steer their kids in that direction. Easy to read, great photography, compelling stories about snakes, science, the growth of a young boy who just started out watching nature shows on TV and turned that interest into a career as a world-class zoologist. Excellent choice!

Stunning photography
A fabulous book, replete with color photographs of the snakes. Kids will gravitate to the pictures first, and then the text will engage them in Dr. Mason's research. His comments are child-oriented, yet will not insult the older readers in the audience. Bob's stories of his childhood and career path are an added bonus to this book....and may even encourage more budding "Snake Scientists"! Well done!

Song of the Paddle an Illustrated Guide to Wilderness
Published in Hardcover by Key Porter Books (June, 1988)
Author: B. Mason

The best book on "Living in the Outdoors"
Bill Mason was one of the best writers on canoeing period. He uses humor throughout the book and gives canoeists and campers of all kinds practical tips on the outdoors, canoeing and life in general. I highly recommend this book as an addition to anyone's library. Especially those of us who enjoy canoeing and understanding others' thoughts on the outdoors.

Bill Mason helps you to hear "the song"
A few years ago, I stumbled upon this book. At the time, I had some river canoeing experience, and they left me wanting to do more, but I was hesitant because I honestly didn't feel I knew enough about canoeing, I didn't know anyone else who knew any more than I did, and I didn't have the spare dollars to hire someone who did. This book solved my problem. Mason covers just about everything related to caoeing, and he does it with humor and wit, and an easy to read style. There are times when he gets ahead of himself, and you have to stop and reread, and do some thinking. But this is for the better anyway as good canoeing requires some use of the noggin'. You'll find preparation lists, hints and strategies all through the book for everything from day trips to full blown wilderness excursions lasting weeks. There is an excellent section on canoe safety and the basic paddling strokes (which was the section that got me back on the water with the confidence to learn and improve). Mason covers portaging, use of a compass and maps for navigation, rescue techniques, includes a few recipies (that work quite well) and even gets into the trickier maneuvers a skilled paddler can attempt. Besides all that, Mason includes plenty of stories (including a couple of hair-raising ones) that will make you laugh, think, and-most likely-help you hear the song too! My copy is getting all worn out from constantly rereading, and you'll likely do the same to yours.

One of my all-time favourite books!
Bill's love for Canada and his passion for camping in the wild come through gloriously in this loving look at outdoor tripping and living. It's chock full of tips and stories and quite honestly is my favourite camping and canoeing book by far.

Great Book
I am a great fan of Ms Mason's owning 2 of each book she has ever wrote. the are all action packed and full of live history events. Nick and Amiee meet on a river Boat during a card game. Later he looks alover for her with no luck. When the Cival War breaks out he is a Captain and is sent to A Plantation finding that after 5 yrs she is the owner with a small child. They have their ups and downs all through the book but in the end Love prevails. I love it as I do all of the books

FANTASTIC ! AN AMAZING STORY YOU WON'T FORGET.
This book is one of Connie Mason's BEST. I've been a fan of her writing and I have never been dissipointed. With this book, the story was beautifully written.I shared it with my two sisters and they too, thought it was one of those books that is a must keep, to read again and again because you can never forget it.It is worth your time, I have to say that I finish it in one day,and I don't usually finish that quickly. If you never read Connie Mason's books, I suggest you pick this one. The characters in this book are GREAT.

EXCELLENT!!! ONE NIGHT READ!!!!
THIS WAS A VERY ROMANTIC BOOK. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN

Thinking Mathematically
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (June, 1982)
Authors: John, Mason, Kaye Stacey, and Leone Burton
Average review score:

Great for the transition to university maths
This book helped me quite a great deal with my foray into university mathematics, which are quite different from the algorithmic problems one is often dealt in highschool. Before reading this book, I would often read a problem and just be /stuck/. If it were a test, I would put a question mark in the answer blank and just move along. This is because I didn't have a sense of where to begin with novel problems. After reading this book, though, I learned the tricks of specializing and generalizing. Much of the advice given in the book might seem obvious ("start with small cases," "draw a picture," etc.) but doesn't really get thought of during a stressful exam. By working through this book (and you have to *work* through it, don't expect to read it like a novel trying to glean advice), any sufficiently mathematically-minded person can deserve to call themself a mathematician, for they will truly begin to think like one. After it, they should check out Velleman's "How to Prove It" and R.P. Burn's "Numbers and Functions."

A Students Review
I used this book as a text at The Evergreen State College. It was a tremendous help in developing skills to reason through complex problems. By identifying stages of mathematical reasoning, such as being stuck, generalizing and making conjectures, I have developed an entire new approach towards solving mathematical problems. I now employ techniques in problem solving such as deciding the magnitude of the problem, collecting the information that I know, reviewing problems to find underlying principles and reflecting on the key moments in which I made large steps towards a solution. This new structured technique towards problem solving has provided me with a more thorough understanding of mathematics, better confidence in my answers and a more in-depth analysis of solutions. In addition I have increased my ability to teach others mathematics and to approach all problems requiring mathematical analysis.

you learn mathematics by doing it.
I used this book for a course I taught at the University of Connecticut. It has a lot to offer, especially for the price. Sample problem: draw a bunch of lines across a piece of paper. Can the resulting picture be colored only in black and white, with no adjoining regions sharing the same color? Works through examples like this one in excruciating detail, encourages the reader to sweat through problems, the payoff coming when you start to see patterns not in the problems themselves, but in how you approach them. Last chapter consists entirely of problems, with suggestions on how to attack, and then extend them.

American Constitutional Law
American Constitutional Law: Introductory Essays and Selected Cases by Alpheus Thomas Mason and Donald Grier Stephenson is a book that when read you'll find an intricate blend of history and politics.

This is an excellent book for those studing constitutional law as there are plenty of case study with selected readings, queries, and key terms associated with each particular case. You'll get a real good dose of the constitution here and why decisions are the way they are at that time. Applying standards drawn from the constitution, the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbitor and guardian of individual privilege and governmental prerogative alike.

This book gives the reader a broad understanding of the present with respect to the past and includes relevant extrajudicial material. A very good introductory book on American Constitutional Law.

This book is the best basic text on U.S. Constitutional law.
For any student of American constitutional law, this book is the best exposition of the fundamentals of the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court. Further enquiry into the subject is not possible without an understanding of the ideas presented in this book.

Canoescapes

Author: Bill Mason
Average review score:

Fabulous!
I love Bill's art. He had a simple way of capturing the moment and beauty of the land, his land here in Canada. I'm so glad we've been able to see these marvellous paintings and sketches in a book format. In this way his work, which never gained him the notoriety he deserved while alive, allows us all to enjoy them around the world.

Canadian Wilderness as seen from the inside. Marvelous!
Bill Mason brings alive the Canadian wilderness in a way that I only imagined possible. The emotion in his paintings and words took me to the remote corners of canoe country like nothing short of being there would. The deep understanding that Mason had for the north country came out strongly in this book; so much so that I often found myself wandering into the corners of one of his paintings, remembering a trip to a similar lake, or waterfall, or wilderness escape. This is a MUST read for anyone who enjoys the outdoors
